A city of stars

Andromeda Galaxy is an enormous gravitational system containing stars, gas, dust and dark matter. A galaxy image can show a bright central region, star-forming areas, dust lanes, spiral structure or signs of interaction with neighbouring galaxies.

How to read the image

Bright blue regions often trace young hot stars, dark lanes can mark dust that blocks visible light, and warm or reddish areas can highlight gas or older stellar populations depending on the wavelength and processing used.

Think about scale

Even a single galaxy such as Andromeda Galaxy is far larger than the entire Solar System. The gaps between individual stars are enormous, while the galaxy as a whole is bound together by gravity over billions of years.
